Alexander Downer

A federal politician for nearly 24 years, Alexander Downer was Australia's longest serving Foreign Minister. He is a member of one of South Australia's leading political families. His father, Sir Alec Downer also reached cabinet rank in federal politics and his grandfather was twice Premier of South Australia and a senator in the first federal Parliament in 1901.

He has an unparalled grasp of the global community, its countries, governments and peoples, as well as organisations such as the World Bank and the United Nations.

Mr Downer was recently the guest speaker at a function organised by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and it was generally agreed the he was the most interesting speaker in the ten years that the function had been held.

Jade Lewis

Jade Lewis

I have a dream for all Australians!

A dream to see our nation drug free! A dream to see young Australians take a stand against drugs, crime and violence! A dream to see those families destroyed by drugs restored! A dream to see the lives of the drug addicted, free! A dream to see all Australians living a free and successful life! A dream that we can partner with YOU to do so!

Jade’s story is nothing short of a miracle, from a medal winning, aspiring young athlete at 15, to heroin addict by 18, Jade became free from her addiction at 22 when she entered the Teen Challenge WA program.

James Charles

James Charles

James was chosen in a District 9500 Group Study Exchange team to go to California in 2005 (the first Indigenous team from 9500).

This was an excellent learning experience culturally, professionally and personally. As a Podiatrist he has been working fulltime in Aboriginal health at 3 clinics in Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

He completed his Masters in November 2008 and is currently working towards his PhD with research on Aboriginal foot health. He is now a Rotarian and has been involved with raising funds for scholarships for Indigenous people to study health.

 Gemma Sisia

Gemma, at age 24 saw an incredible need in Tanzania where the poorest students received no education leaving them in a tragic cycle of poverty.

In Februarty 2002, partly with the help of Rotary, she founded the School of St Jude in Northern Tanzania.

The school started with three very small, bright and underprivileged students with one teacher and a single classroom. Now eight years later the school has grown to over 1300 students, spread across two campuses and employing over 350 local staff.

Each year new buildings are constructed, often by Rotary working parties, to house the next intake of students thus allowing the oldest students to progress into the year above.

Gemma will tell us her inspiring story about seeing a need and, in partnership with Rotary, finding a solution.
